DPS Compete in Portishead Raft Race
July 2009

Although on Portishead Boating Lake the organisers had set a challenging course … around the ‘Horn’, into a bloomin’ force 10 gale!

25 teams took part in what proved to be an fantastic event on a lovely summer’s afternoon aside the Avonmouth Riviera. The DPS crew were pitted against a myriad of local teams (incuding an engineering company who design aircraft carriers (!)).

Following some light hearted skullduggery with the Lidl crew, we emerged from the other side in a 3 way tie for 1st. The finished line beckoned, but the head-wind made for a lung busting last 100m. In a tight finish we were pipped into 2nd and had to settle for a creditable spot in the runners-up final.

With little time to recover we were off again in said final, only to be outsmarted by a team allegedly consisting of 2 semi-professional rowers and a boat designer (but we’re not bitter) who relegated us into 2nd place … so overall an extremely creditable performance from “a pallet on some barrels”.

We are collecting for the Portishead lifeboat, so if you have a spare few coppers please feel free to donate - http://www.justgiving.com/dpsraftrace/
